Abraham Hulk Senior was born into a family of artists in Amsterdam. He chose to study at the Amsterdam Academy between 1828 and 1834 under the guidance of the celebrated portrait painter JA Daiwaille. However, Abraham Hulk’s interest lay in marine paintings and he is mainly noted for his Dutch estuary scenes.
In 1833 and 1834 he visited North America and held several successful exhibitions before returning to Holland. He finally settled in London in 1870 where he lived and worked for 27 years, thus qualifying as a British artist. His son Abraham Hulk Junior and his brother William Frederick were both landscape artists who also lived in London.
Hulk exhibited in The Hague and Leeuwarden, at the Royal Academy in London between 1876 and 1890 and at the Royal Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street.
Beautifully composed rough waters, typically Dutch in influence, conception and execution, and indeed, probably a scene off the Dutch coast.
